Welcome to The Creighton Cabin. The Creighton Cabin is an actual place. It is my great-great grandparents’ home, built about 1874 and still standing today.
So much has grown from the real Creighton Cabin and the surrounding farms and neighbors that I thought it would be a great place for us to gather, metaphorically, to share history, stories, our creative productions, ask questions, and share thoughts in the quiet stillness of nature.
I started with posting some articles here on Substack, and then asked Carla Allgeier, my distant cousin connected by the real Creighton Cabin to join my endeavor. On our website, www.thecreightoncabin.com, she posts her beautiful artwork. Geographically speaking, we are a state apart, but we are connected by this special cabin and the magic of the internet.
On my Substack, you’ll read a combination of things. It’s where 200 years of Appalachian family history meets 21st century ponderings and doings. I’m an economic developer by day, a certified business advisor, lover of local and family history and mysteries to solve. I’m an optimistic introvert and self-contrived adventurer and traveler. I like to challenge the status-quo and, in the pioneering spirit of my ancestors, find new solutions to problems. I often ask, “Why?”
I was recently called a “contrarian” for traveling north in the middle of cold January. I like to do things that most people won’t. Make my own path. That fits with my mom’s description of me a couple decades ago when she laughingly said, “You can be a stubborn, independent little cuss.” (I confess, that might be my favorite description ever. It just makes me laugh.)
If you are so inclined after reading the articles, please share them with your friends or others who you think may enjoy it.
So pull up a chair and stay awhile. As one of my grandfathers would have said, "There's no need to hurry off."
This is beautifully written Crystal. I look forward to reading more about your stories.
